This dog comes with us to the bus stop every morning. It's pretty much the highlight of her day.  Today, was almost the last time she made it to the bus stop. I let her off the leash and she bolted across the street to visit the neighbor at the very same time a car came speeding down the road. I stood on the sidewalk, my mouth open in a silent helpless scream. It played out in slow motion.  I knew this was it. I knew that the dog and the tire would meet in the middle of the road at exactly the same time. I was resigned to the outcome, when miraculously, the dog averted disaster with a quick 180, literally, right next to the still spinning tire of the vehicle. It was as if some divine power put a wall up and she turned to avoid hitting it full speed. Meanwhile, the bus stop mom's were judging me for my incompetence as a pet owner, and undoubtedly, as a mother.
