The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Growing up, I thought Halloween was a holiday. I didn’t know it wasn’t
until we took a little road trip to San Francisco for some Halloween shopping
and I saw kids getting off the school bus. I was 21. Seriously.
It turns out that the state where I was born
and raised and one day hope to return to, the state for which I have so much pride,
the great state of Nevada, celebrates it’s statehood on the 31st of
October, thereby dubbing each October 31st a state holiday.
Having Halloween day off from school is amazing. You have all day to work on your costume, and
to decorate your yard to make it extra scary, and you have the anticipation of
waiting all day to go trick-or-treating without any of those pesky daily tasks
to distract you. When I moved to New
Orleans, the very first Halloween holiday celebrated outside of my home state, I was
so disappointed that I had to rush home from work to get everything set
up. Also, it was 100 degrees. Way to put a damper on the holiday there
mother nature. I am of the opinion that
the month of October should be downright chilly. The South seems to disagree
with that. I may or may not have bitched
and moaned about it for several weeks after, okay, months, OKAY years. Moving
to southeast Virginia did not change things much, although, the weather has
been borderline chilly for the past few years.
I am excited this year though, because Halloween is on a FRIDAY! I took
the day off from work to decorate the yard and set up for Cadet's Halloween party,
in which I will have 30 tweens chasing each other around for 3 hours. I am super excited.
I love this time of year.
